Safely Dispose of Prescription Drugs at ECH

Studies show that many abusers of prescriptions drugs often get them from unused supplies at their home or a friend or relative's home. Removing unused controlled medications, especially opioids, from our communities, is one more thing we can do to help fight the opioid crisis in our communities.

The University of Vermont Health Network - Elizabethtown Community Hospital has prescription medication collection bins at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital and Ticonderoga Campus. Medication collection bins are specially designed to prevent access to the medications after they have been deposited. The 38 gallon receptacles hold a specially designed liner which when full will be removed from the bin and securely transported to a facility for destruction.

Here's what you can safely dispose of:

  • Prescription medications
  • Over-the-counter drugs
  • Prescription ointments, creams and lotions

Elizabethtown Community Hospital 

The prescription medication collection bin at the UVM Health Network - Elizabethtown Community Hospital is next to the entrance in the main lobby. The lobby is located adjacent the Emergency Department (ER) and is open seven days a week from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. 

Ticonderoga Campus

At the Ticonderoga Campus, use the emergency department entrance on the upper level and follow the hall down to the elevators. The prescription medication collection bin is located across from the elevators. The Ticonderoga Campus is open seven days a week from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

There are now six depositories in Essex County. The bins are located at the Ticonderoga Police Department, the New York State Police Troop B headquarters in Ray Brook, Moriah Pharmacy, Keeseville Pharmacy and at both Elizabethtown Community Hospital campuses. Other retail pharmacies also conduct regular take back events.
