September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2019 there will be about 174,650 new cases of prostate cancer and about 31,620 deaths from prostate cancer. And staff members at the University of Vermont Health Network - Elizabethtown Community Hospital are working to change that.

For the third year in a row, Bruce Barry, director of the hospital's paramedic program, is sporting a kilt every Tuesday to raise awareness that September is Prostate and Testicular Cancer Awareness Month -- and to encourage men to get screened. Most men with prostate cancer are over 65 and do not die of the disease. 

This year, Grant Martin, hospital pharmacist, and Nabeel Hameed, EMT, have joined Mr. Barry and the three are calling on you to help. Here's how:

  • Spread the word on social media.
  • Encourage men to get prostate and testicular cancer screenings.
  • Donate to the UVM Health Network - Elizabethtown Community Hospital's oncology unit. Donations will go toward equipment to enhance patient comfort. (Mail donations to: 75 Park Street, Elizabethtown, NY 12932 or call (518) 873-3003.)
