Diagnostic Tests and Treatment

The cardiologists at ECH work with you using the latest diagnostic tests for cardiovascular disease. Some of the diagnostic tests include:

Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) – an EKG is a common, painless test that measures the electrical activity of the heart. An ECG can tell if your heart is beating normally or detect heart disease or problems with the electrical conduction system of the heart. An ECG also can record signs of damage to the heart and the effects of drugs or devices such as pacemakers.
Holter Monitoring— a Holter Monitor is a machine that your doctor will order which will continuously record your heart rhythms for 24 hours or more. Because it is worn for an extended time period, it can help physicians determine if there is a problem with the heart that would not normally be detected with an EKG.
Echocardiography – Echocardiography is a diagnostic test that uses ultrasound waves to make images of the heart chambers, valves, and surrounding structures. It can measure cardiac output and see any inflammation around the heart (pericarditis). It can also be used to detect abnormal anatomy or infections of the heart valves.
Exercise Tolerance Testing – also known as a “stress test,” this is used to evaluate the heart’s ability to respond to stress of physical activity and determine if there are any problems with the blood flow to the heart. This is currently only available at our Elizabethtown campus.

Your cardiologist will work with you to find a treatment, which may include certain procedures, medications, and/or lifestyle modifications.

Cardiac Rehabilitation is a specialized program that helps patients develop heart health through education, physical activity, and lifestyle modification intervention and may be ordered for patients with certain heart conditions. Talk to your cardiologist about whether you might be a candidate for cardiac rehab at ECH. Specialized cardiac rehab programs for patients with Peripheral Artery Disease are also available.
