More than 170 people braved damp conditions and challenging half marathon and 5k courses to compete in the Doc Lopez Run for Health.

The University of Vermont Health Network - Elizabethtown Community Hospital held the 43rd annual Doc Lopez event April 30 to benefit the patients and families who receive care at the hospital’s two campuses and six health centers in Essex County. The half marathon drew nearly 50 participants and more than 120 people ran the new 5k trail loop behind the Cobble Hill Golf Course in Elizabethtown.

For the second year in a row, Jeremy Drowne of West Chazy took home first place in the half marathon. He finished in 1:15:40. Erin Rasco, a Keeseville native, was the first female finisher with a time of 1:24:23.

Among the top 5k finishers, two of Elizabethtown Community Hospital’s own employees led the pack. Michael Bodnar, an emergency department technician, was the top male finisher with a time of 21:41, and Sarah Gardner, a physical therapist, was the top female finisher with a time of 25:23.

This was the first year the event included a trail run, a challenging loop course that traversed mountain bike trails along the outskirts of and behind the Cobble Hill Golf Course. “People seemed to really enjoy the uphill climbs, scenic views and occasional puddles,” said race director Sue Lopez Allott. “The trail element was a nice change for the event; one we’ll plan to keep in the future.”

More than $9,000 was raised for the hospital’s Caring Hearts Fund, which supports personal touches like a change of clothes for those who unexpectedly find themselves in the emergency room, gifts for those hospitalized during holidays and a warm cup of coffee or tea for those undergoing chemotherapy.

“We couldn’t ask for more. We had a great turnout, lots of support from volunteers and local businesses and the rain held off for most of the event. It was one of those days that makes you feel lucky to be a part of this community,” Elizabeth Rogers, the hospital’s director of development, said.
