The University of Vermont Health Network - Elizabethtown Community Hospital is again hosting its annual Doc Lopez Run for Health, now in its 44th year.  The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 28 and features a half marathon and 5K trail run.

Registration for the Doc Lopez Run for Health is open and race organizers expect another good turnout. Sue Allott, race director and daughter of Doc Lopez for whom the race is named, says the spring run always has a good draw, “The half marathon course is challenging, starting in Keene Valley, with a two-mile climb over Spruce Hill and into Elizabethtown. The timing makes it ideal for anyone training for a late-May or June marathon.”

Race proceeds benefit ECH patients and their families through community programs designed to remove barriers to a healthier lifestyle.  Julie Tromblee, MSN, RN vice president and chief nursing officer said, “the Doc Lopez Run helps fund a wide range of ECH programs that help make our community stronger like free health screenings throughout the year, financial assistance, diabetes education prevention and the Community Cupboard which is located within the Crown Point Health Center.”

44 Years Running

Now in its 44th year, The Doc Lopez Run for Health half marathon is an exciting race on a scenic stretch of mountain roads between the communities of Keene Valley and Elizabethtown, New York. Athletes of all levels will enjoy the 5K trail run behind the Cobble Hill Golf Course in Elizabethtown. The route is hilly and offers rewarding views.

The community support, aid stations and complementary pizza and goodie bags will help fuel the runners. The event attracts well over 150 runners from as far away Western New York, Albany, Vermont, and Canada.

Dr. Robert “Doc” Lopez was a veterinarian and accomplished runner from Westport. Doc started a special tradition when he carried the torch for the 1980 Winter Olympics through Westport and Elizabethtown. Running up and over Adirondack “hills” became the foundation for the running event, which has changed routes and expanded over the years. The race has been held since 1980 to benefit the health of the local community.
